Apple Crumble

Back to basics. Apple crumble is one of my favourite desserts; it’s homely, it’s comfort food; it’s something you can cobble together with very few ingredients and little effort, and still churn out something delicious. Not to mention that it’s begging to be drowned in custard (another one of my favourite items of consumption). I don’t really follow any recipe for this. In fact, I love how simple it can be. It takes literally 3 steps to make!

img_4147It’s really nice being able to use a Pyrex dish, because you can see all the smooshy apples at the bottom after it’s done baking.

  • 110g flour, sifted
  • 20g caster sugar
  • 30g brown sugar
  • 50g butter
  • 4-6 apples, depending on size

Preheat the oven to 180C.

Cut the butter into small cubes, and rub it into the flour and sugar to achieve a dry, breadcrumb-like texture. Peel and dice your apples, but try not to make them too small or you’ll lose their texture. Chunky apple bits in a crumble are good! Spread the apples in a single layer in a 8×11 dish and sprinkle the topping over it. Don’t worry if some parts aren’t even; that’s the beauty of this dish. Bake for 40 minutes.

I used Royal Gala apples, but you can use pretty much any apple. I quite like my desserts sweet, so these were a perfect choice (plus, they were on sale).
